SOS - Mulshi Area
People's initiative in protecting wilderness and eco-systems in Tamhini- Mulshi area
Rich in biodiversity and natural resources Tamhini - Mulshi area (towards north-west of Pune) is facing tremendous pressure due to uncontrolled tourism. Come monsoon and huge number of two wheelers and four wheelers turn towards Tamhini - Mulshi to enjoy natural places and wilderness. There was no harm in doing so till it came to ruining streams by plastic waste or snatching orchids from trees to bring them for home gardens. There is a list of such exploitative acts that is damaging the quality and richness of nature in Mulshi. Ignorance about its ecological value is one reason people do such exploitation. Many a times just by giving proper information tourists withdraw from such abusive activities and even show interest in conservation of nature.
Following are the protective measures that oikos has identified to minimize the impact of from uncontrolled tourism in this area and to create awareness in tourists for its ecological worth:
1.Installing informative signage along the highway at a particular stretch from Palse to Kondethar.
2.Installing waste collection system along with signboards at Palse waterfall, Tamhini temple forest and Kalubai sacred grove, which are the sensitive spots in this stretch.
3.Build a team of eco-guards to be present in this entire stretch during peak tourism time. The responsibility of SOS eco-guards is primarily to keep watch on illegal and damaging activities and communicating the message of conservation with the tourists.
This is our ongoing program and is more active during monsoon season. Support is needed for all these activities in following ways- Financial support for sign boards and waste collection system Team building for eco-guard activity, volunteers, Travel management. For further details, contact oikos.
