Dear Nature Lovers,
Greetings from oikos !
Summer sets in & the deciduous forests become leafless, with brown colour dominating the landscape. Few plants still retain their leaves. But with this dynamism, forests become very productive with new flowers & tasty fruits.
Chamel, with large camel foot shaped leaves & beautiful flowers attract attention in April. It can be used to enhance beauty of parks and gardens.

Chamel / Kanchan wel
Scientific name: Bauhinia vahlii
Family: Fabaceae
A perennial, large, woody climber frequent in deciduous forests of Amarawati, Chandrapur, Nagpur, Pune, Raigad, Yawatmal in Maharashtra and all throughout India. It grows extensively on large trees & clusters forming dense patches. Such dense areas will provide good habitat for faunal diversity.
White flowers, in large, showy bunches start appearing in March-April with rising temperatures. The climber has peculiar leaves, two lobed, camel foot shaped & large sized sometime upto 10 inches. These leaves are used for making baskets, plates and as packing material. Pods are brown, woody & velvety. Large sized brownish seeds are roasted & eaten by locals. The climber can be easily propagated by seeds.
