Dear Nature Lovers,
Greetings from oikos !
Happy to put before you next set of thoughts inherited from our dear teacher Late Prof. Prakash Gole.
In the light of discussion done in earlier month, it can be said that –
We can’t live without ‘Natural resources’, ‘Biodiversity’
and the ‘Services’ which are offered by ecosystems.
If we wish to cherish life ‘as human race’ for long time,
We will have to think about them…
We will have to maintain balance within natural systems.
But, in our everyday life do we think of this ?
Every day we crave for comforts of family, children, loved ones…
We think only of human beings !
Let’s have a look at history of life and current statistics.
How life evolved on earth…
|
|
Timescale shows earth has really invested long time in creating today’s life !
Timeline also shows humans appeared recently as compared to all other life forms.
We did create sanctuaries and national parks to protect them.
But looking at statistics, 96 % land in India is appropriated by humans.
Only 4 % is real virgin area which human beings can’t access.
But still we want our share in their protected area. Isn’t it gross injustice ?
Instead of creating more areas in our 96 %, we are maximizing pressures on their areas.
Also, much of the biodiversity is there outside protected areas,
which is providing a number of services to local people.
Urban and global aspirations are putting a lot of threat on it.
Non human beings can’t make their choices, they have to just accept and adjust.
Human beings can make choices, can have alternatives, non human beings cannot !!
We must respect their right on this earth which belongs to them equally !
We must value their worth, being the very foundation for our life !
We must preserve them to let our own future generations live a healthy life ! |
Regards,
Ketaki & Manasi.

We at oikos have been working on ‘Forest restoration’ project in Koyna catchment since 2005. Positive results can now be seen on land where focus is to restore resources like soil, moisture first. Click Here for details
Project work was also covered by ABP maza on occasion of World Environment Day, 5th June.
