Dear Nature Lovers,
Greetings from oikos !
Wishing you a very Happy & Healthy New Year !!
This is the 9th year of ‘Desktop calendars’ ! With ever increasing support & positive response from all of you, we take this opportunity to have this year’s theme e ‘NATURE CONSERVATION & RESTORATION’.
Working in the field of ‘Ecological Land Management’ since 2002, we are fortunate to have worked on more than 100 land parcels mainly in Maharashtra, Karnatak, Goa with the aim of conservation. Having gathered a lot of data, information & knowledge about the various ‘Landscapes’ their connections with local community, stresses by increasing developmental activities & diminishing biodiversity; we thought to share the ‘Conservation & Restoration’ perspective, originally put forward by Late Prof Prakash Gole.
We would like to dedicate this theme to him for his valuable insight ‘Management of Natural Resources for sustainable development’.
We hope that through these calendars, every individual will find a way to give back to nature ! |
Regards,
Ketaki & Manasi.

Nature is not mere entertainment, its a life supporting system !
How do we look at nature, as an urban citizen ?
During routine life, we crave for holidays in the company of nature.
We choose some nearby destination for weekend outing or
a distant destination in wilderness for a long vacation.
Over-booked resorts in our national parks indicate exactly the same.
We enjoy company of nature, feel contented, revitalized …
Being in the company of nature is almost a need for many people.
Most of us look at nature as a relaxing tool, entertainment.
Nothing very wrong about it but - Are we giving something back to Nature ?
Are we doing anything to preserve it to enjoy same holidays forever ?
Do we know its fate ? How many of us know its importance beyond entertainment ?
Each and everything we use in daily life comes from nature.
Be it a tooth paste or pen or mobile or clothes or shoes or fuel …
Everything is manufactured from raw material from nature’s depot.
This raw material is then highly processed to offer us a finished product.
We have only one earth to supply these raw materials. Resources are finite.
With finite resources we can’t suffice ever increasing demands.
If at all we wish cherish our life as human race,
We have no option than to preserve Nature in a healthy state.
We will have to change this ‘linear process’ of extracting resources
to ‘cyclic process’ to ensure constant supply of services and products.
First step to achieve this is looking at nature in more ‘cautious way’… |
Let’s value nature beyond entertainment … |

We at oikos have been working on ‘Forest restoration’ project in Koyna catchment since 2005. Positive results can now be seen on land where focus is to restore resources like soil, moisture first. Click Here for details
Project work was also covered by ABP maza on occasion of World Environment Day, 5th June.
