Dear Nature Lovers,
Greetings from oikos !
And A Very Happy New Year !
It’s our pleasure to put before you the next set of calendars
With a theme - GRASSES - SIGNIFICANCE AND USES.
Grasses offer n number of benefits to the environment and local people.
In coming year we will try to explore its functions
as well as various uses or services offered to mankind.
One of the very important functions of grasses is their soil binding capacity.
When any piece of land is degraded from forest, nature produces a variety of grasses
as a response to degraded conditions and tries to produce maximum biomass
to make the soil rich with organic matter and nutrients.
So, many of the grass species in India, indicates degraded conditions.
One of them is पांढरी कुसळ i.e. Aristida, a grass from low rainfall area (av. 250 mm).
As an adaptation to poor soil and stresses like fire and grazing,
grass develops special part called awn, a stiff bristle, i.e. कुसळ,
which protects grass seed from getting eaten and safe guards the next generation !
Such grasses are pioneering species and if protected makes a way to superior grasses and flora.
Let’s understand this value of grass and protect them ! |
