Dear Nature Lovers,
Greetings from oikos ! In light of the discussion in all calendars from Oikos for last year,
it can be said that TO CONSERVE NATURE AND OUR FUTURE, we need to minimize our ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT in every action… be it conservation, industrialization or day to day living ! Ecological footprint is a measure of human demand on Earth’s resources. This resource accounting is in terms of the consumption of - Energy, Building material, Biomass (food, fiber), Water, Minerals and Other Resources. Of which ENERGY is the major contributing factor… Because to extract or to process all other resources, you need energy ! And major source is fossil fuel ! Burning of which creates lot of pollution. And not only using but also extraction process is very pollutive. BUILDING MATERIALS like cement or iron are most energy consumptive. Also they are non biodegradable i.e. can’t get assimilated into the soil, and non renewable resources. They are limited on this earth. Extraction, Usage and After-effects of use are harmful for humans as well as non humans. So, the only, safe, non-pollutive and sustainable sources for energy and materials are - Sunlight, Wind, Human power and Animal power and Biomass !
or doesn’t pollute their habitat or other resources. Indirect usage, i.e. converting sunlight / wind into electricity could be pollutive again, because fossil fuel is needed to make this conversion. As it can be reproduced within very short time period. And managed production of the same doesn’t stress the ecosystems but strengthen it ! It’s high time we should realize the importance of Biomass and Sun’s energy And develop simple technology to use it sustainably in long term for betterment of – both human beings and non human beings !! |
