Dear Nature Lovers,
Greetings from oikos !
Landscape management is another effective tool for conservation.
It can be also connected to local livelihood especially in rural areas.
It doesn’t only strengthen your resources like soil and water
but also improve economic and social structure of village.
Classic example could be given that of village Lamkani in Dhule district.

Under the native leadership of Dr Dhanjay Newadkar,
villagers of Lamkani protected 300 ha of grasslands
nearby their village and overcome drought and poverty
both, ecological as well as economical, in last twelve years.
Earlier the area was totally degraded due to overgrazing, fire & other human activities.
Conservation practices like total protection, soil water conservation, zero grazing,
control on fire and plantations were successfully implemented with
people’s participation and support from forest department.
JFM committee was formed.

All these efforts resulted in fantastic rejuvenation of savanna type of landscape
which offered various services like improvement in ground water level
thereby increased productivity in agricultureyear round availability of nutritious grasses.
All this really changed the lifestyle and economy of the village.
Earlier one could never get 10 litre of milk in a day from the entire village...
now it has changed to 3000 lit per day !

Ketaki & Manasi.
