March - 2012
Dear Nature Lovers,
Greetings from oikos !
Few orchids flower during scorching heat of summer. One of them is Denrdobium barbatulum, which starts flowering in this month. White flowers are really attractive in scorching heat.
Regards,
Ketaki & Manasi.

Dendrobium barbatulum (Scientific name)
This is a common epiphytic orchid found in Western Ghats, Konkan and Deccan. In Marathi, it is called as ‘Vasant Amri’ because it flowers during this season, i.e. during March to May. It is also called as ‘Bearded lip orchid’ as the lip base shows presence of yellow hair.
It is commonly found on trees like Jambhul, Mango, Waras etc. It flowers in summer while the leaves appear during monsoon, from June to October. Size is around 40 cms. Conservation status of this orchid is ‘vulnerable’.
